Finals week

I have thoroughly enjoyed my business classes this semester. I feel like they have taught valuable lessons that i will need. Currently in my Business Communications class we are working on our last report section. Prior to this section i did not have any idea what a memo style report was. I have enjoyed learning about them and how they work. I am working on the final draft of a memo report on Mexico Country, it has tested my skills and knowledge about the things and techniques of memo writing that i have learned. I am not a big fan of writing, however my business communications class has really helped me learn valuable techniques to improve my writing skills. I feel a lot more comfortable about my skills to write and produce valuable materials that will be beneficial to me in the future.

Analytical Report

Currently in my Business Communications class we are in the report section of the class. I have never really written a report in memo format. I am learning a few things that I know will be helpful when i get into the business world. Sometimes I do not realize how many technical parts there are to a report and how important it is to set them up right.

We have a group project right now that we are doing. We had to pick a country that we would like to move our product into. We are doing research to see if it would be a viable country to produce our product then we have to make an analytical/ informational report to inform our prof. about the things we have learned about the country. I think doing this report will be great practice yet again to learn better how to write different types of reports.

I have enjoyed my Business classes this semester. The classes i am taking have helped guide me in the direction that I want to go now to achieve my degree. I have decided that I really enjoy communications, but i also have realized that i like to be the leader and help make decisions and be part of all the on goings. I have decided that I will get my bachelors in business and then go on to receive my masters in Health Administration. I want to become a CEO of a hospital. I think the classes that i am in now have been a great foundation for making my decision.

Business Communication

This week I have been doing a lot of thinking about my likes and dislikes. I am still not sure in what are i should study in business. I finally came to the conclusion of doing business administration. We had a few assignments in my business communications class that helped me learn a few skills that I felt were great to learn that i did not know before. Through these assignments it has made me do a lot of research on different areas of business and I have found most of my interests are under an assertive personality which lead me to administration. I have enjoyed my communications class, I feel that it has taught me some valuable lessons for me to know in the future.

Analizing an annual report

I was given the assignment of looking up a company and then reviewing it’s annual report. I had to analyze; total liabilities, total assets, net income, net loss, and many other things. I chose a casino called, The Riviera. It was interesting how much I could interpret on the annual report that just 3 months ago I would not have understood.

Unfortunately, I have decided that I am not a big fan of accounting. I know I am learning plenty and it will all be good to know, but I just do not think it’s what I want to further my studies in.

Today in my business Law class we discussed an interesting topic, wills. I have always heard and known a little about wills but I have never studied so much about them. It was interesting to learn about them and why wills are so important. One thing that really stuck out to me was if you do not make a will before your death and leave your inheretence to otehrs then after your death the state in which you live makes a will for you. This i learned was not an efficient way because they only have two ways to distribute your stuff and thats it. The kids of the deceased person do not get a say as to how or where the goods are distributed. An ideal age to start constructing your own personal will is around the age of 23 or when you are moved out of your parents home and have started collecting your own personal things.

Resume and Cover letter

For my Business communications class we have had to make a resume and cover letter to apply for a job and or an internship. I have chosen an internship to apply for. I have enjoyed creating a resume and revising it. It’s nice to know that i am improving my resume skills as well as my writing skills.

I also have created a cover letter. I didn’t realize how important the cover letter is. I had always thought that the resume was the more important thing, however, what I have learned is that the cover letter is seen first and usually by judging the cover letter is what makes the reviewer want to look at the resume or not. I do not have much experience in business right now so i felt that letting people know, via my cover letter, that i have great attributes and communicating skills was important and essential for them to go ahead and want to look at my resume.

Networking

Today I was talking to some friends about school and where it is going to lead us and how really unsure we are about what we are going to do after graduation and how many options of work there really are out in the world. We were talking about how we come to school to learn and gain knowledge, but we really do not learn a lot about how we are going to be doing our jobs. I think its true. Here at school we are trying to gain as much information and knowledge as we can. Then when we apply for a job and get that job they will teach us how it is to be done,however, one thing that we were talking about and we felt that it was very important was networking. Here at college we have a great chance to network. By networking I mean we have a great chance to get to know a lot of influential people. When we meet persons of the sort we must take full advantage of talking to them, sharing with them our personal brands that we have made for ourselves and get our names out there. In the business world it is often said, ” It is not what you know, but who you know.” I know that I have to keep networking during my college career as much as I can. In the end I hope to be a hard worker, with strong work ethics, and many connections in many places.

Last week I was assigned to read a few paper on creating a positioning statement. Also included in those papers was, “how to create a good personal brand.” I have just a few thoughts about that assignment.

While I was reading there were a quite a few example of position statements,however, most of the example were of people who were very qualified for the positions they were applying for. I started pondering and I realized that in my life I really do not have to many things that qualify me for big business jobs. I was also thinking about what I would put in my position statement that could even compare to the statements I was reading. I really felt that I did not have much to compare.

One of the last papers I read started talking a lot about how many interviewers actually look for someone who can communicate well, express themselves, are very personable, and can be all that in about a min or less. This paper really boosted my confidence because I am a very good with communicating. I love to meet new people and introduce myself. I can get my point across quickly and firmly as well. I also am very personable. I grew up with 4 brothers and was raised by two parents who all have great personalities and are very nice people. So I am glad to know that even though I may not have to many accomplishments as of right now I have many other great qualities going for me.

Air Traffic Controller

Just recently in my MIS 2200 class we have worked on a project of completing a resume and a cover letter. Our Prof. asked us to find a possible job/internship that we could apply for in the near future. This assignment has caused me to think about what it is that I am really looking to do after graduation. Believe it or not through my searches I thought about checking out some information about becoming an Air traffic controller. To achieve this possible goal of mine there are a few things that would need to be done to position my self in a good spot to pursue this possible occupation. First, I will want to wrap up my current major in the next, no longer than 2 years, to be able to start looking at FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) approved schools. Most of these schools are a 3 year school. After having finished up school at a FAA approved school I would achieve my CTI certificate. Afterwords I would be able to get some training in and then start to move my self into the bigger air control towers to start to career.

Ever since I was a youngster I have always loved planes. I have always really wanted to be a fighter pilot but I have also had the goal of having a family. If I were to become a fighter pilot I feel that it would take me away too much from my family. So as I was looking for possible future business jobs this is why possible pursuing the career of an air traffic controller came to my thoughts.
